3D Printing Services / 3D Prototyping

Are you ready to bring your ideas to life in three dimensions? At The Surgery, we not only bring cars back to life, we offer cutting-edge 3D printing services in Wellington to turn your imagination into reality. Whether you’re a hobbyist, designer, engineer, or entrepreneur, our advanced technology and expert team are here to meet your needs.

3D printing has a range of applications across multiple industry sectors, architecture, product design, industrial design, jewellery design or you just need to print a custom part for a personal project or home design ideas. 3D printing is a great way to prototype or manufacture objects.

The latest generation of 3D printers can cater to a range of complex, detailed, organic in form objects. It is also a time efficient way to produce physical models over other card or foam techniques templating techniques. Our 3D printing service allows for prints that can be printed as one piece or broken up into multiple section and attached together for presentations

3D Prototyping is a use-full tool to take advantage of to keep the progress moving while waiting for parts to arrive. The Surgery often create 3D models of the components used in our EV conversions so that work can continue while the real parts are being shipped around the world to us. Most suppliers have STL or 3D files that can easily be converted for printing at 1:1 scale.

If you’ve got a project in mind or you’re just curious about how you can get creative using our 3D printing services feel free to get in touch.

What is 3D Printing / Prototyping, and what can I use it for?

There are a wide range of 3D printing filaments commonly used for our 3D printing services
  • PLA (Polylactic Acid) – PLA is one of the most popular and widely used 3D printing filaments. It’s derived from renewable resources like cornstarch or sugarcane, making it environmentally friendly. PLA is easy to print with, has minimal warping, and produces low odor. It’s suitable for a wide range of applications, including prototypes, toys, and decorative items.
  • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) – ABS is a durable and impact-resistant filament commonly used in 3D printing. It has higher temperature resistance compared to PLA, making it suitable for functional parts, automotive components, and household items. ABS requires a heated print bed and well-ventilated environment due to its tendency to emit fumes during printing.
  • PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) – PETG combines the strength and durability of ABS with the ease of printing of PLA. It’s known for its excellent layer adhesion, impact resistance, and transparency. PETG is commonly used for mechanical parts, food containers, and display prototypes.
  • TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) –  TPU is a flexible filament known for its rubber-like properties. It’s resistant to abrasion, oil, and grease, making it ideal for applications requiring elasticity and impact resistance, such as phone cases, shoe soles, and seals.
  • Nylon – Nylon is a strong and versatile filament suitable for a wide range of applications. It offers high tensile strength, flexibility, and chemical resistance. Nylon prints may require a heated chamber to prevent warping and improve layer adhesion. Nylon is commonly used in engineering applications, functional prototypes, and mechanical parts.
  • PLA+ – PLA+ is an enhanced version of PLA filament, offering increased strength, durability, and heat resistance compared to standard PLA. It retains PLA’s ease of printing and eco-friendly properties while providing improved mechanical properties.
  • ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) – ASA is similar to ABS but offers better weather resistance and UV stability, making it suitable for outdoor applications. It’s commonly used for outdoor signage, automotive parts, and architectural models.

These are just a few examples of the many types of 3D printing filaments available. The choice of filament depends on the specific requirements of your project, including strength, flexibility, temperature resistance, and surface finish.
